Who are we?

In 2005, the agencies and organizations in Orange County that work with the older adult populations recognized the need to address this health concern.  A “Down with Falls Forum” was held in Orange County in July 2005.  As a result, several government agencies, non-profit organizations, college districts, medical and therapy practices, residential facilities, and businesses made a commitment to the development of a Down with Falls Coalition to serve the needs of older adults in Orange County. 

In order to develop the Down with Falls Coalition, Rebuilding Together Orange County and County of Orange Office on Aging received an 18 month coalition-building grant from the Archstone Foundation. 

Coalition’s Mission

To raise community awareness in Orange County by promoting comprehensive strategies to reduce the risk of falling. 

Coalition’s objectives

1. The Coalition will increase in size and diversity and become a recognized entity and resource in the older adult service provider community; 

2. Down with Falls becomes the “household brand” for fall prevention programs, services, and resources for Orange County older adults; 

3. The coalition becomes a comprehensive clearinghouse for fall prevention knowledge and community resources; 

4. Older adult service providers and community members become more aware and knowledgeable of strategies to lower the risk of falls; 

5. Advocate for countywide home and public changes to lower the risk of falls in Orange County.

What is happening right now?  

The coalition members have completed the needs assessment collection. A total of 838 surveys were collected from Orange County older adults! The strategic planning process began with a lively meeting where coalition members offered their input for proposed activities for the coalition to undertake over the next year or two.  At monthly strategic planning meetings, members continue to develop the strategic plan and work on many of the short-term objectives outlined in the plan.
